Swedish History Museum - from Vikings to Gothic Hall

http://www.historiska.se/home/

The Swedish History Museum is packed with history spanning thousands of years, from as far back into prehistory as we can go, via the Viking era to the Middle Ages. Encounter the most fantastic artefacts and lose yourself in stories about the past and the people who lived before us.

Vikings

Welcome to the Swedish History Museum's Vikings exhibition.
Vikingautställningen
The Vikings are possibly best known as brutal robbers. Today there are many pictures and stories about the Vikings. They describe how they travelled around the world frightening the life out of people. This is not the true story of the Vikings.
The Vikings were mostly peaceful traders. However, most of the people who lived in the Nordic Countries during this period were not Vikings. They were farmers, hunters and craftsmen. The exhibition does include weapons, but it also includes thousands of objects which give a different picture, telling the story of everyday activities, religious beliefs and family life.

Gothic Hall

Welcome to the Swedish History Museum's Medieval Ecclesiastical Art exhibition.
Medeltisdsutställningen
This exhibition displays many well-preserved altarpieces from the Middle Ages. Altarpieces were the equivalent of today’s picture books. Most people in the Middle Ages couldn’t read. Instead they learned the stories of the Bible from decorative altarpieces. The story of the life and death of Jesus is depicted here, as are the stories and lives of the saints.
How much do you know about Sweden’s own saint, Saint Birgitta? Did you know she had eight children? Borrow an audio guide and learn more about her exciting life.
The exhibition also includes fonts and other religious objects such as missals, altar crosses and receptacles for bread and wine. There is also a reconstruction of a small rural church showing how things might have looked in Västergötland at the end of the Middle Ages.
