Book Spotlight and Excerpt: The Trial of Arthur Whitty by Tim Walker

The Trials of Arthur Whitty is Tim Walker's personal homage to one of America's greatest short stories, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber.

This novella is the story of plain old Arthur Whitty, a man whose dreams are never dull and whose vivid imagination and sense of humour carries him through a series of sometimes challenging situations. Arthur has retired to a pair of slippers and jigsaw table in a quiet cul-de-sac in Berkshire, England. He walks his dog, Max, and lets his mind wander to a series of dreams in which he is more daring, skilful and adventurous that his real-life humdrum self. He is an irritant to his orderly wife, Emilia, and has succumbed to irksome cancer treatment following a run-in with skin cancer.

Once a date has been set for corrective surgery, Arthur sets his mind on organising a real-life adventure – a bucket list trip to Machu Picchu in Peru where he finds peace and a calming of the spirit. Arthur’s bullish nature carries him through a series of situations but there is little the retired couple can do about the onset of dementia. But Arthur is well supported by Emilia and their daughter, Holly, as the family rally round to make his declining years as comfortable as possible. And there’s always escape to his secret world of risk, responsibility and danger. In his dreams, Arthur always wins.

The author has drawn on personal experience and observations of elderly men in a support group he helps run for Men’s Matters charity in Windsor, Berkshire. Half of all royalties from the sales of this book will be donated to Men’s Matters, who support older men by encouraging social interaction and connecting them to health and wellbeing support services.

Arthur at the Pet Shop

Just three doors down, Arthur entered the pet shop and stepped into a different world, like Mr Ben starting a new adventure. The smell of musky animals assailed his nostrils in the dimly lit, claustrophobic space as he strode to the counter, passing stacked rows of subdued creatures. A snake wriggled; its diamond patterned scales catching his eye. A wheel span as a hamster tried its best to attract a buyer to rescue it from this dingy holding cell for captured animals.

“What can I get for your loved pet today, Sir?” a cheerful teenaged girl trilled, clearly sticking to the script.

Arthur noticed a poster of a man whipping a dog sled team across a snowy landscape behind her. It had tried to snow a few days earlier, but now it was nothing but mush. “Mush, erm… dog biscuits please.”

She smiled sweetly and blinked her long fake lashes twice. Arthur noticed a silver ring hanging from her nose that swayed when she leaned forward. “What brand and what size?”

“The one that says, ‘see your dog’s coat shine like a dewy morning’ on the packet. Make it a medium.”

She slipped behind a curtain into a back room, leaving Arthur staring at the poster…

“Mush! mush!” dog sled champion Art Whitty urged, cracking his whip over the heads of the lead dogs. The team rewarded him with renewed effort as the sled dropped a foot onto the flat, icy surface of a lake. Beyond the pine trees on the far side was the finishing line.

The ice cracked and groaned under his racing sled and Art glanced down to see thin tendrils spreading outwards. Looking over his shoulder he saw one of his main rivals, Calgary Kate, flop her sled onto the ice with a loud crack. Too loud, as the surface gave way and her sled fell through the ice into the freezing cold water. Her scream and cry for help caused Art to hesitate. Should he go back and save her, or drive on to the finish line? He could clinch the six-race championship today.

With a sigh, he turned his sled around. He would haul her out by the ring on her nose if necessary. There would be other races…

“Here you go, Sir.” A kilo packet with convenient handles was plonked on the counter between Arthur and the picture. “That’ll be nine-ninety-nine. I’m sure your pooch’s fur will shine with these.”

“Award-winning Schnauzer, actually.” Arthur tapped his card on the machine, instantly regretting the cheap, unnecessary lie. They had a mongrel rescue dog with bald patches caused by anxiety. “Good day,” he cheerfully quipped as he left the shop. Arthur put the bag down to check his phone. No messages and five minutes to spare.

Tim Walker is an independent author living near Windsor in the UK. Born in Hong Kong in the Sixties, he grew up in Liverpool where he began his working life as a trainee reporter on a local newspaper. He went on to attain an honours degree in Communication Studies in South Wales before moving to London where he worked in the newspaper publishing industry for ten years.

In the mid-90s he opted to spend a couple of years doing voluntary work in Zambia through VSO, running an educational book publishing development programme. After this, he set up his own marketing and publishing business in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, then managed a mineral exploration company before returning to the UK in 2009.

His creative writing journey began in earnest in 2014, as a therapeutic activity whilst recovering from cancer treatment. In addition to short stories, he researched and wrote a five-book historical fiction series, A Light in the Dark Ages. The series connects the end of Roman Britain to the story of Arthur in an imaginative narrative. It starts with Abandoned, then Ambrosius: Last of the Romans; Uther’s Destiny; Arthur Dux Bellorum and Arthur Rex Brittonum, the last two books charting the life of an imagined historical King Arthur.

More recently, he has written a dual timeline historical novel set at Hadrian’s Wall, Guardians at the Wall. His two books of short stories, Thames Valley Tales and London Tales combine contemporary and historical themes and are now available as audiobooks. Somewhere along the way, he co-authored a three-book children’s series with his daughter, Cathy, The Adventures of Charly Holmes.

Excerpt

1481 - Dampierre-sur-Loire, Anjou

I am the dowager queen, and I should be in England, housed in splendour, lauded, pampered, surrounded by royal grandchildren but instead I am exiled, confined to this backwater in France. Queen of obscurity, of notoriety. I curse each day as it dawns, bringing another unendurable four and twenty hours in which to think … to remember. Little more than a pauper, I am a pensioner of King Louis. I am exiled, ousted and excluded from the country over which I once ruled. Defeat sits heavily on me. My body pains me, my heart aches and my mind is tortured. How did it ever come to this?

I am a victim of treason, betrayal and regicide. Yes – regicide, the cold-blooded murder of an anointed king and the theft of his crown. Gentle Henry, my husband was brought low by the ambition of the cursed Duke of York and his devil-spawned son.

Even while serving the fifth Henry in France, York chafed against Lancaster, smarting each time a better man was shown greater favour than himself. He coveted riches, he coveted power, no matter the cost, and he sneered at Henry’s efforts to reign peaceably.

The moment I arrived in England as Henry’s queen, I became the focus for York’s hatred. He despised me as a foreigner and a woman, and believing their claim superior to that of Lancaster, the House of York coveted the crown for years. They misliked the way Henry heeded my advice. My directives influenced the king more often than York’s and oh, how that wounded him!

For a long time, our mutual dislike simmered, increasing and spreading like bubbles in a boiling pot until it became so hot, so virulent that it overflowed, splitting the court asunder and forcing cousin to side against cousin.

As England’s noble houses wrought violence against themselves and kin slaughtered kin, dark clouds gathered over England and the rivers ran with blood. With York so close to the crown he could almost grasp it, civil war was inevitable. Spurred on by his kinsmen and his litter of flea-ridden pups, York reached out for what was mine, and in the end, he took it.

On the day we slew York and his son at Wakefield I thought we had won, but his spawn soon replaced him. The repugnant Edward took up his father’s banner. Edward the regicide, the usurper who killed my son, and murdered my king. They locked me away but even when I begged to be allowed to die, he forced me to live.

My life since has been worse than a thousand deaths.

I can barely recall the young, green girl I once was, unskilled in policy, and a stranger to the country I would come to love.

The father-and-son team's published books include the new release horror Silent Fear (A novel inspired by true crimes) and the bestselling historical adventures White Spirit, Fiji: A Novel and Into the Americas. They also have several series including The Orphan Trilogy, an international thriller series, the globetrotting action-romance series The World Duology, and the controversial non-fiction franchise The Underground Knowledge Series, which includes Genius Intelligence and The Catcher in the Rye Enigma.

Several of their books have been regular visitors to Amazon's bestseller lists over the years.

An additional non-fiction title they're especially proud of is Debunking Holocaust Denial Theories, which was written in collaboration with Holocaust survivors to document the genocide.

Lance's first solo-authored novel, a historical adventure-romance titled New Zealand: A Novel, was published late 2024. Spanning almost 500 years, this novel covers the respective discoveries of New Zealand by Pacific Islanders and Europeans. From the outset the two stories are interposed. It starts in the 1300’s with the departure of Islanders from Hawaiki in search of land far to the south. Researching and writing this epic was literally half a century in the making for Lance who described the task as "A labour of love that spanned 50 years.”

The Morcans’ production entity, Morcan Motion Pictures, has a number of feature films in early development, including adaptations of Silent Fear, Into the Americas, and White Spirit.

It’s 1768. A chance meeting at London’s dockyards sees medical student Nicholas Young recruited as Surgeon’s Boy to serve under Captain James Cook aboard a bark called the Endeavour. Ahead of the handsome 17-year-old is a voyage that will test his mettle and take him to uncharted places at the bottom of the world. One of those places being a land Dutch explorer Abel Tasman discovered the previous century when he encountered its western shoreline. The land was occupied by tattooed, brown-skinned, warlike people. A land Tasman called Nieuw Zeeland.

Nearly five centuries earlier, in 1301 AD, huge, twin-hulled canoes depart the South Pacific Island nation of Hawaiki. Aboard each craft are 80 villagers hand-picked by their rangatira, the mighty Hotu. Raids by enemies from neighbouring islands prompted the decision to flee their homeland. Their destination is a land far to the south. Many weeks later, the survivors aboard Hotu’s canoe sight the eastern shoreline of a rugged land covered by cloud. They call it Aotearoa – land of the long, white cloud.

In 1769, eight months after departing England, Nicholas Young and his crewmates arrive in Tahiti aboard the Endeavour. The Surgeon’s Boy is quickly becoming a man; the journey out was a baptism of fire for him with mid-Atlantic storms resulting in injury and death. In Tahiti, Captain Cook puts his men to work, building an observation post from which he can observe the transit of Venus. Nicholas is excused from shore duties after a local priest, Tupaia, informs Cook that Tahiti’s beautiful queen, Obadia, has invited his Surgeon’s Boy to stay in the village as her guest. Tupaia didn’t mention he convinced the childless queen that Nicholas had been sent to her by the spirits of her ancestors and that he would give her a son. The beautiful queen seduces a surprised but delighted Nicholas, and in the weeks that follow they enjoy long days and nights of lovemaking.

It's 1501 AD and for the first time the hills of Aotearoa echo to the sounds of war. As the competition for food and land increases, so too does inter-tribal fighting between tribes of the brown-skinned people who now call themselves Maori. Apera, chief of the Te Arawa tribe, leads a war party down the east coast, attacking settlements along the way. Defeated warriors are either enslaved or eaten, for cannibalism is widely practised.

October 1769. It's springtime in Aotearoa. A Maori boy sits alone on a sandy beach, looking out across a sparkling bay. On his right is a headland that extends far out into the blue Pacific. Moki is the oldest son of the chief of the Ngati Porou tribe. He’s a proud descendant of Hotu whose battered canoe arrived on this same beach centuries earlier. Moki suddenly jumps to his feet when he sees a tall ship far out to sea. Mistaking its billowing sails for a giant seabird, he flees inland to his nearby pa, or fortified village, to alert the villagers to the approaching danger.

Aboard the Endeavour, Nicholas serves as lookout in the bark’s crow’s nest. Many long weeks have passed since leaving Tahiti. He spies land and shouts, “Land ahoy!” He’s looking at the very headland Moki was sitting alongside moments earlier. So delighted is Cook by the sighting, he names the landmark Young Nick’s Head after his keen-eyed lookout. The captain suspects it’s part of the eastern shoreline of the land Abel Tasman called Nieuw Zeeland. Translating the Dutch to English, Cook renames it New Zealand.

After anchoring in the bay, the captain dispatches a contingent of his marines ashore. From aboard ship, Nicholas and his crewmates look on as the marines are greeted by an impassioned haka, or war dance, performed by Ngati Porou warriors armed with clubs, spears and other Stone Age weapons. The chief’s brother is killed and several warriors wounded in the inevitable violence that follows. So disillusioned is Cook by the conflict, and by the apparent lack of fruit and game, he names the region Poverty Bay.

This first bloody encounter with New Zealand’s indigenous people is a sobering harbinger for what follows.

The Endeavour’s circumnavigation of the new land will be an experience that breaks some men. But not Nicholas. The Surgeon’s Boy is now as ready as any of his crewmates to face the many challenges that life will throw at him in the long weeks and months ahead.

EXCERPT

An ember flew from the dying fire as if it spit the last of its breath. The sparks passed through the witch’s soul and landed in the shadow on the floor. It rolled up to the head of the shadow.

Head? What? A chill raced up the Grim Reaper’s spine. That can’t be! Souls don’t have shadows.

Azrael’s gaze raked the floor in disbelief, seeking an explanation. Finding none, he scanned the room, determined to find the cause, but though impossible, the shadow came from Tabetha’s soul.

Just as he opened his mouth to mention the oddity, Tabetha’s form solidified. The next second, the beautiful witch’s body wavered and faded until it was once again ethereal. If he’d blinked at the wrong time, he’d have missed it.

Surprise widened Azrael’s eyes, and his mouth gaped open. “How did you do that?”

“Do what?” asked Tabetha.

“Become solid?” His heart raced.

“I do not know what you are talking about.”

“You were solid. I saw you become solid. Ordinarily, souls can’t do that.”

Tabetha shrugged, and both eyebrows jacked up onto her forehead. “Maybe I’m not an ordinary soul.”

“Perhaps you aren’t.” Azrael rubbed his chin thoughtfully before he continued, ticking each point off on a finger as he listed them. “You can’t remember how you died. You are a witch. You just became corporeal. I think you are very special indeed.”

After a thoughtful pause, during which he eyed this amazing soul, he continued. “I think we better go.”

“Are you taking me to Summerland?”

“Summerland? As in heaven for witches?” Azrael shook his hair, scattering his raven bangs about his forehead. “No. I can’t reap your soul if you can turn corporeal. I’m going to have to take you somewhere other than the afterlife.”

Tabetha fisted her hands on her hips as her deep blue eyes flared slightly. “If we aren’t going to Summerland, where are we going then?”

As much as he knew he shouldn’t, there was no other choice.

Azrael pursed his lips together. “I’m taking you to the land of the immortals.”
