History Trivia - Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, flees Britain

All Souls’ Day.  


1164 Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, left Britain because of a quarrel with King Henry II.  He fled to Flanders and stayed away from England for 6 years.

1093 Malcolm III MacDuncan, King of Scots, was killed while laying siege to Alnwick in an invasion of England.  He was succeeded by his brother Donald Bane.

1541 Henry VIII was informed that Katherine Howard was involved in two affairs before their marriage.

1570 A tidal wave in the North Sea destroyed the sea walls from Holland to Jutland. More than 1,000 people were killed.

History Trivia - Julius Caesar's second invasion Britain begins

 54 BC   Julius Caesar's second invasion Britain begins as he lands his troops, probably near Deal, Kent.

1124 Tyre (city in Lebanon) surrendered to the Crusaders. 

1307 King Edward I of England died at age 68 on his way to subdue the new Scottish king, Robert Bruce.

1456 A retrial verdict acquitted Joan of Arc of heresy 25 years after her death.

1550 Chocolate was introduced.

1575 Raid of the Redeswire, the last major battle between England and Scotland. The Scots proved victorious. The story of the skirmish was turned into a Border ballad.

1607 “God Save the King" was sung for the first time.

1098 Antioch fell to the Crusaders.

1179 The Norwegian Battle of Kalvskinnet outside Nidaros. Earl Erling Skakke was killed, and the battle changed the tide of the civil wars.

History Trivia - Thomas Becket canonized

1173 Thomas Becket was canonized. The Archbishop of Canterbury, one-time friend and opponent to King Henry II of England, had been murdered less than three years earlier, and the swift canonization by Pope Alexander III was a clear message of rebuke to the king.

1431 Public trial of Joan of Arc began.

1437 King James I of Scotland was murdered in the Dominican Friary at Perth, which sparked a civil war.

1523 Christian II was forced to abdicate as King of Denmark and Norway.
