The Illustrated Woman by Mark Barry

Mary Ann Bernal review of The Illustrated Woman by Mark Barry

The Illustrated Woman is a story about a young woman’s choices in the game of life. Despite Emily’s normal upbringing, extenuating circumstances leaves her on her own, struggling to raise her 8-year-old daughter with a limited income. Emily’s obsession with having her life’s story told on her body via various tattoo designs is the catalyst for her descent into the seedy world of prostitution. Despite Emily’s chosen profession, she still dreams of being married to the man she loves, knowing he will never make the commitment. Mr. Barry manages to shed light into Emily’s psyche - the reader knows why Emily makes poor choices, eliciting sympathy rather than condemnation. An excellent story for this genre.

1520 Martin Luther burned his copy of the papal bull Exsurge Domine outside Wittenberg's Elster Gate.

1541 Thomas Culpeper and Francis Dereham were executed for having affairs with Catherine Howard, Queen of England and fifth wife of Henry VIII. Culpeper was beheaded and Dereham was hanged, drawn, and quartered, and their heads were placed on top of London Bridge. Catherine remained imprisoned in Syon Abbey until Parliament passed a bill of attainder on 7 February 1542. The bill made it treason, and punishable by death, for a queen consort to fail to disclose her sexual history to the king within twenty days of their marriage, or to incite someone to commit adultery with her. This solved the matter of Catherine's supposed precontract and made her unequivocally guilty. She was subsequently taken to the Tower on 10 February and was executed on February 13th.

Hollywood Shakedown by Mark Barry

Mary Ann Bernal review of Hollywood Shakedown by Mark Barry.

The author has expertly woven a tale of greed and lust into a compelling story of a ruthless man’s quest to obtain a missing manuscript.  The wealthy Mortimer Saxon coerces Buddy Chinn to do his bidding, tempting the alcoholic writer with money, but threatening his life and the life of his woman, Monique, should he fail.  We are introduced to many worlds in this thriller, from racetracks and bars to chess tournaments and British football.  Mr. Barry immerses the reader quickly into the intrigue, an enjoyable page turner that is difficult to put down.  I look forward to reading more of this author’s work.

An Interview with Author Wendy Steele

Welcome to Meet The Author! Today Wendy Steele has stopped by to give us a little insight into her life and her books.  So let’s get started.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I live with my partner Mike in Essex, England with three children and three cats. I worked in the City, BC (Before Children),  but since 1999 have indulged my creative side, training in natural therapies, belly dance and writing.

When did you start writing?

My first piece was a poem at age 10, after visiting the Tutankhamen exhibition in London and, ever since, I've come home from new adventures and committed my thoughts and experiences to paper. My first piece of published (and paid!) writing was an article for the Dancing Times, after attending my first day of belly dance workshops in London, eight years ago. As a child, I read and wrote stories, losing myself in the lives of the characters; while in my early twenties, I wrote children's stories and short stories but it was on a two day writing course, nine years ago, that I believed I could be a writer. I liked the character I created on the course and, over the following three years, proceeded to write my first novel between school runs, children's clubs, family domesticity,  cleaning other people's houses and stacking shelves in a supermarket. After attending Swanwick Writers Summer School for the second time and receiving great advice and help, I made the decision to take time away from teaching dance and complete the current novel I was working on and getting it published.

What projects have been published?

Destiny of Angels - First book in the Lilith Trilogy is my first novel and I also have two short story anthologies, Into the Flames and Turn Down the Heat available at this time.  I have two more books launching on 1st December.

Tell us about Destiny of Angels.

Destiny of Angels is about Angel Parsons, who experiences two traumatic events in her childhood.  She decides to revisit the scene of her childhood pain and, with the help of her new 'family', offer the perpetrators of her distress the opportunity of redemption, rather than exact revenge upon them.  She offers them the choices and opportunities to change their lives for the better but only they can choose.

Angel and her partner Aidan, a landscape gardener and former stripper, enjoy a passionate, strong relationship. The 'family' Angel has brought together are Sophia, a slim, smart and sassy young woman who runs her own company, carrying on the philanthropic work of her granddad; Maddy, a petite, doll-like young woman who runs her own events company; Eli, a big, triathlon running hunk who adores women and has a laid back approach to life; Zac, a broad, dark, quiet man who runs his own fitness centre, and Jed, a rugby playing Adonis who runs a security firm and helps Aidan expand his business into vertical gardens.

Angel also meets up with her one childhood friend from school, Jenny, and she and her family play a fundamental part in the story. Angel was welcomed into their family as a small child and so, it is from this experience she bases her belief of what family is.

The story unfolds as Angel's 'family' present the childhood miscreants, Clare, Rob, Tiffany, Justin, Danielle and Vincent, with opportunities to improve their lives and the choices they make, as well as Jenny and her brother Tim, moving forward with their lives.  Angel too, with the help of Lilith, the dark goddess, learns about what really matters in her life and that all the money in the world won't bring you happiness if you don't have love.

How did you select the title of your novel?

With the main character being called Angel, I messed around with Angel's Choice and Angel's Destiny, but decided Destiny of Angels had a bit more oomph!

What was your inspiration?

I've always been interested in where people come from, their start in life and how this affects them as adults.  Some people carry their past as a burden while others break free of the past and start their lives anew.

The knowledge that Angel acquires during her childhood and young adulthood, gives her an unusual perspective on life and with these powers at her disposal, she takes control of her own destiny by deciding to close the chapter in her life that caused her so much trauma.

I wanted to write a story about a different character, someone living her life from an unusual starting point, but still a story about everyday people that readers would recognize.

What are you currently working on?

The second book in the Trilogy, Wrath of Angels.

What are you reading at the moment?

I've a few books on the go!  I'm reading a new book for a friend as a first reader and the new book by Mark Barry, The Ritual as well as Mystical Qabalah by Dion Fortune, as I hone my research for Wrath of Angels.  I have to admit to Mort by Terry Pratchett too, as when I need a book to just flow over me, I always turn to writing.

What do you like to do in your free time when you're not reading or writing?

I love to get out in the fresh air as much as I can, irrespective of the weather.  Dancing is my passion, and my exercise!  I dance ATS® belly dance and perform with Tribal Unity.  We've performed at healing festivals and other events all over the country this year.  I love to learn new things and ATS® really tests me both physically and emotionally.

Do you have any advice for other authors?

I'm not sure I can offer advice, but I believe the most important thing about writing is that you love it, can't live without it and have to write.

And finally, can you tell us some fun facts about yourself, such as crossed skydiving off my bucket list?

Nothing so daring as that!  I learned to read music at the age of four when I learned to read words and I write most of my work with a fountain pen and black ink on lined A4 pads.  I also have my fountain pen from my A levels filled with blue ink, ready for me to use for editing.

Kid Atomic by Mark Barry

Mary Ann Bernal review of Kid Atomic by Mark Barry

Kid Atomic is a story about Kevin Taylor who has joined a protest group on University, and soon finds himself dangerously involved with a radical faction whose sole purpose is to destroy Great Britain.  Mr. Barry expertly weaves into story the complexities of coming of age as Kevin deals with a myriad of emotions, from dealing with bullies to falling in love.  Once Kevin becomes the keeper of the Device, the opportunity for vengeance suddenly is a reality, but could he destroy everyone, including himself in the process?  No spoilers here.  An enjoyable story.

An Interview with Author Jeff Davis

Welcome to Meet The Author! Today Jeff Davis has stopped by to give us a little insight into his life and his books.  So let’s get started.

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I’m an artist - fine art, illustration, graphic design, videography. My professional career led me to be an art director for a major multinational tech company. In 2002, my division and my team of four artists and six programmers was surplused. I had the choice to go to NYC, (I saw the office… Madison Ave., 7th floor), or stay home and be Mr. Mom to my two-year-old and 6-month-old children. I chose to stay home.

Ten years later, I still see it as the best decision I’ve ever made. I never would have forgiven myself if I missed those years.

When did you start writing?
I started writing for customer websites around 2003. Copywriting is really like micro storytelling. You have to convey all of the emotion of a story in one or two lines… it’s very challenging. I didn’t really start, though, until 2011 and my first NaNoWriMo, (National Novel Writers Month), Challenge. It was a daunting task, and I was really worried about it. Once I had gotten through that month, (I hit 50k words), I knew there was nothing else that I wanted to do as much as writing.

What projects have been published?

My first real novel, “The Seeds” was published in May of 2012. It’s a Young Adult fantasy work that I’m really proud to have completed.

Tell us about “The Seeds”

Mankind has destroyed the planet, and it is rebuilding itself. The grasses and plants have come back. So, too, have the insects and many of the animals. Along with them, the first children, the Tarols, have emerged from their long sleep. They have set up a society charged with maintaining the Balance.

When one of their own returns with a mind full of vengeance, it is up to the Queen’s children to protect the realm and the society they have built.

And the bats… the bats don’t like them much.

How did you select the title of your novel?

There are actual seeds that play a pivotal role in the story. I tested a few ideas for a title among family and friends, but “The Seeds” was always the default.

What was your inspiration?

I was watching a moth flutter by one day, and I thought to myself, “What would happen if that moth was too large to fit in a bat’s mouth?” The story grew from there.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a bunch of projects. Along with this year’s NaNo, I’m writing a sequel to “The Seeds”. I’m also working on an unrelated novel directed at the Percy Jackson-Artemis Foul level audience regarding time travel and magic. I also have a non-fiction work underway about why people have such a hard time admitting that they don’t know something. I’ve done some interviews with experts on that one, so it’s really fun and interesting.

What are you reading at the moment?

On my night table: The Game of Thrones four volume set, as well as a few other that are waiting.
On my Nook: There’s an Artemis Foul book that I’ve been reading to my kids, and I’m reading “A Summer of Frogs” by Tressa Green. A very moving, soulful book by a wonderful indie author.
As soon as that is done, I’m chomping at the bit to get to “Mockingbirds” by Chuck Wendig. I read “Blackbirds” and loved it. I think Wendig is a major player in the world of gritty realistic urban fantasy. Not for the timid!

What do you like to do in your free time when you're not reading or writing?
I paint, and I always take a few commissions around this time of year. I’m also getting ready to shoot a local commercial for a product launch, along with the video work I do with our local schools and church. I keep pretty busy.

Do you have any advice for other authors?
Write every day. Read as much as you can. Try new authors, but don’t be afraid to toss them if their work isn’t thrilling you. That said, don’t be afraid to try them again in the future. With so many indie authors out there, there is a wealth of talent just waiting to be discovered. They may not all be the writers they are going to be yet. Give them a chance, keep checking back, and learn from them.

Did I mention writing every day? Yeah, do that.

And finally, can you tell us some fun facts about yourself, such as crossed skydiving off my bucket list.

Well, I have gone skydiving, which is easily the most thrilling thing you do fully dressed. My biggest accomplishment is having had kids for more than a decade and they still love me. The fact that my wife still wants to hang out with me now that she really knows me is pretty amazing too.
After 35 years, I quit smoking four months ago. Cold turkey. I’d punch a nun for a cigarette right now.

There are a few places on the planet I’d like to go, and I’ll get there… sooner or later!
