Sample The Adventures of Cecilia Spark - the Brimstone Forest by Ngaire Elder
Excerpt
from book 1 The Adventures of Cecilia Spark – the Brimstone Forest
Cecilia and Flurry had been sneaking round
the garden for ages, but hadn’t managed to catch ANY creepy crawlies. She was
starting to get hungry and, if truth be told, a little fed up.
She wandered over
to her snuggery; the old shed at the bottom of the garden. She sat down, opened
her backpack, took out the snack box and bottle, then tossed a dragon cookie to
Flurry. He ate it greedily.
“Dragons,” she
chuckled. “What if dragons were real, Flurry? We’d chase after them lightning
quick, wouldn’t we?”
With that, she
tossed the remains of her cookie into the creature catcher and started running
round the garden, spinning around in circles. Flurry joined in, chasing
Cecilia, jumping and barking.
Cecilia started to
feel very, very dizzy. She flopped to the ground and Flurry came and lay beside
her, panting wildly. She lay there gazing at the big, fluffy, white clouds
floating in the sky. She could see different shapes in the clouds: a face with
a long, pointy nose drifted past; the Loch Ness Monster glided through the sky,
followed by a space ship, a canoe and a gigantic snail.
The cotton-ball
clouds started moving faster, swirling and whirling. She shut her eyes to make
them stop, but before you could say, ‘Don’t dilly-dally down daydream alley’ a
witch had zoomed down on her jet-propelled broomobile.

Sample The Adventures of Cecilia Spark - the Mystical Mountains of Terra by Ngaire Elder
Excerpt from Book2 The Adventures of Cecilia Spark –
the Mystical Mountains of Terra
There wasn’t much conversation between them
as Cecilia and Soldier followed Pacha to meet her master. Cecilia marvelled at
the variety of animals and birds that lived on and around the mangrove root
system; oysters and mussels, monkeys and spoonbills. Pacha paused now and then
to snack on a shrimp or crab, catching them nimbly with her paws.
“Not far now,” she
announced.
They had travelled
for about two hours, and were deep in the heart of the mangrove. They could see
fires flickering a short distance away. Soldier shivered. He glanced at the
gemstone, and then looked for Pacha, but she was nowhere to be seen.
“Psssssst,
Cecilia, something’s not right.”
“Shhhhh, Soldier.
We’re nearly there.”
“But look, look at
the gemstone! And Pacha has gone.”
She glanced at the
citrine gemstone which had now turned a dark shade of grey and then at the
compass; the needle was spinning round and round. The mangrove had become
deafeningly silent and the hairs on the back of Cecilia’s neck were standing
up.
“This feels
creepy!” exclaimed Cecilia.
“I know. Let’s get
out of here!”
Cecilia was
shaking her head and gazing around. She didn’t know which way to go since the
compass was still going wild.
“I wish I’d
listened to you.”
“Too late for
that!” scoffed Soldier.
Pacha reappeared
on a branch close to them.
“I’m sorry,” she
whispered.
The screech that
followed was ear-splitting. Something moved down towards them; massive wings
out-stretched and the ear-splitting noise came with it. The leaves on the trees
began to wilt and curl up, then fall to the ground. The tree bark turned black
in a flash.
Soldier jumped
into the backpack to escape the noise. Cecilia covered her ears and crouched
down. Gazing up she saw the shadow of a man in front of her. She did not get
up; she followed the man’s shadow with her gaze, then let out a frightful
scream.
It was not a human
being but a beast, with the antlered head and legs of a deer, and the wings and
body of a bird.
The last thing
Cecilia remembered seeing before drifting into the shadows was the gemstone. It
was now black.

About The Illustrated Woman by Mark Barry
About "The Illustrated Woman" by Mark Barry
Published by Green Wizard Publishing
The story takes place in the present tense and in June 2012. First person
narrative from the point of view of the title character. It's a love
story.
Emily is a twenty six year old unemployed lone parent living in a two
bedroom flat on an estate in Bilborough. Her daughter is seven. All the story
takes place in daylight while her daughter is at school, (Unemployed people live
their lives in daylight.)
Once a promising Cellist from a prosperous middle class Wollaton family,
she dropped out of school after a disastrous first relationship with an amoral,
predatory older man and a sneaky shoulder tattoo which angered her parents. They
no longer speak and Emily is alone.
Every week, she charts her life through a developing tapestry of tattoos which cover the left half of her body, from a runic inscription on her foot, all the way to a single tear under her eye.
One half of her body is ice cream white, the other is covered with some of the most ornate tattoos you can imagine.

One half of her body is ice cream white, the other is covered with some of the most ornate tattoos you can imagine.
In a health centre, she meets and falls in love with a depressed older man
who suffers clinical interview anxiety and agoraphobia.
In a world where buses come two at once, she subsequently falls for his friend, a handsome young firebrand, a tall, brilliant, History graduate who, no matter how hard he tries, cannot get a job, even in a Poundshop. Thus, his bitterness transcends the feelings of all three of them.
In a world where buses come two at once, she subsequently falls for his friend, a handsome young firebrand, a tall, brilliant, History graduate who, no matter how hard he tries, cannot get a job, even in a Poundshop. Thus, his bitterness transcends the feelings of all three of them.
The two men spend their lives exchanging prescription drugs, betting on
racehorses in town centre bookies, and sitting on park benches in the Arboretum,
drinking Thor's Hammer cider and discussing alternative history.
Emily is beautiful, corrupted, decadent, lost and fatally alluring to both
men and each respond to her in different ways. As with all triangles like this,
the story ends in a tragedy that affects everyone around them.
The story takes place against a backdrop of decay, broken dreams, mass unemployment, sexual and economic inequality, exploitation, personal despair, Prozac politics, benefit cuts, Tory triumphalism, the Great Olympic Robbery, cynicism, a country obsessed with celebrity, and the coming end of days.
