A new release from House of Punk: PUNKS Presented by Brenda Perlin

 “Why are you still banging on about punk rock?” someone asked me recently. “That stuff’s been dead for over forty years, hasn’t it?”

Dead? Really? Well, maybe dead in the sense that a vampire is dead, i.e., it’s a creature of the night and shuns the sunshine.

But – leaving aside the fact that The Damned are still alive and performing – the strain of rebellion that characterized much of the movement is still with us. It has simply evolved in much the same way that punk itself had its roots in garage rock (and the availability of cheap guitars!). One only has to watch the news to see that the spirit of anarchy and struggle against the System continues.

So maybe it’s time to re-visit those days of stripped-down, anti-establishment music. Though, for some of us, we’re not really paying a visit to the past: a part of us never really left it to begin with.

Crime and Punkishment compiled by Brenda Perlin - book review

My review:

Brenda Perlin has compiled a unique set of short stories reminiscing about the age of Punk when music expressed the anxieties of the world’s youth during a very unsettling time. The author has shared memories from her past as have the other artists not afraid to tell their story, and how the mores affected their coming of age. A very interesting look at another milestone in the history of the music culture. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about a generation younger than mine, and look forward to reading more from this author.

Brenda Perlin is an independent contemporary fiction author of five titles and numerous short stories. From novels to illustrated books, Brenda’s provocatively unique writing style evokes passionate responses in her readers. Ever since she was a child, Brenda has been fascinated with the writing process. She draws her biggest inspiration from Judy Blume who sparked her obsession with pursuing personal expression through prose. Brenda has always lost herself in the world of literature.

Scribbler Tales: A Collection of Short Stories by Mary Ann Bernal, all dark, are written in such a way that you have to read more. The author crafts stories that pull her readers in. Wanting more but getting just enough. There is great skill that goes into her stories but she seems to write with ease. The words flow effortlessly. This is a smart collection that kept me guessing. Slices of life that no matter how far fetched feel authentic.

Second volume of Scribbler Tales is filled with stories of human nature at its finest and certainly at its worse. These pieces are sure to intrigue and inspire. The writing is flawless and the characters were all unique and yet life-like. The author has a way with words and setting a scene that makes you feel that you are among the characters. Her stories bring you to another place and are always a good escape into the unknown.

Volume 3 is another great read. So enjoyed the compelling stories that are unique, well-written and filled with mystery. If you haven’t read Scribbler Tales you should pick up any one of the volumes. They are all worth it for entertainment value. The twists kept me guessing all the way through. I love that!

Volume 4 is rich with stories of greed, deceit and murder. I was instantly heaved into the suspenseful worlds the author has created. Leaving me speechless at times and always wowed. The roller coaster ride is a rocky one which left me wanting more. I so enjoyed the smart twists and the unexpected turns.

Mary Ann Bernal’s Scribbler Tales Volume Five is filled with smart, suspenseful, riveting, and edge of your seat stories. Each one is a gem upon itself. I enjoyed their twists that I didn’t see coming. Very unique pieces that took me outside myself and welcomed into extraordinary adventures.

Mr. Chuckles bumped into LA Punk Rocker, Brenda Perlin, while stirring the Wizard's Cauldron

Brenda Perlin is as big a friend of The Wizard''s Cauldron as there is. This will be the third time we've met around the magic bucket and as far as I am concerned, she can visit whenever she likes.

Author of the popular Shattered Reality trilogy, prodigious reviewer, massive indie supporter and, lately, reader for hundreds of US authors, Brenda's workload is a heavy one. Her reading list fills with trepidation and she actually reads the books in detail, which, in a social network environment where skimming a book is more of a survival strategy than a choice, is something to be applauded.

Recently, Brenda compiled a terrific little anthology about her life as a punk on the streets in Los Angeles in the early eighties. It's called LA Punk Rocker and I picked up the Wizphone to talk to her about it. Here's what she had to say.

I'm A Rhodesian, Nduna by Stephanie Matulich is a touching tale about a young Rhodesian Ridgeback named Nduna. This is in the narrative of Nduna who tells us about his life in his first year and describes the love he shares with his owner in letters to his Grandma.

If you know anything about the love of an animal you will understand the intensity of this kind of unconditional love. It's enough to make you feel whole. Enough to fill your heart and any void you might have. The author makes her feelings quite clear. This is a profound love. A special bond that if you are lucky enough to have had then you will clearly understand the need to write this book.

This is a tale for dog lovers and lovers of all animals and humanity. Brought tears to my eyes while it touched me deep down inside. Extremely moving.

Mary Ann Bernal’s Scribbler Tales Volume Five is filled with smart, suspenseful, riveting, and edge of your seat stories. Each one is a gem upon itself. I enjoyed their twists that I didn’t see coming. Very unique pieces that took me outside myself and welcomed into extraordinary adventures.

Bloodlust starts this thrill ride off in a bang. There is an intensity to the story that made me want to read at a faster pace. Grabbing and imaginative.

 In Illusion, we travel to another country, the Ancient City of Thebes where romance is a must! Though Felicity could not believe her good luck, she would have to re-think that. Could this man be too good to be true? Then in Manhunt, another dark story which is swift and moves like lightning. As sinister as they get.

Pandemic is a surprising story that captivated my senses. Loved the mystery and the dark side of life which reminds you that anything is possible. 

Revenge rounds this novel up nicely. A wicked tale of deceit and nothing is as it seems. A smart thriller that pulls you right in.

All these tales reads like a clever mystery suspense movie in living color. A page turner that was comfy to cosy up to on a chilly winters night. Love this stunning series.

Mother’s Day

Walking out of the bakery, with her young daughter in hand, Andrea felt broken. That crumbled Mother’s Day cookie she just bought reminded her how screwed up her life had become.
“Andrea, let’s get a move on it,” Bruce screeched from the sidewalk.
“Okay, okay. What’s the big deal if we miss a few minutes of the game? ”Picking up her little girl she felt moisture filling her eyes, but she did everything in her power to stop the tears from flowing. She would not cry, she told herself.
Living with Bruce was no longer making her happy. In fact, at that moment, she couldn’t remember a time her husband had ever made her happy, but she had Chloe to consider, and she knew divorce was hard on children. Still, the thought of living one more day with this man made her stomach turn.
“What are you waiting for?” Bruce yelled while he climbed into the Volvo. Andrea stood in the middle of the parking lot, not concerned that she was blocking traffic. She put Chloe down and asked her to get into the car.
“But aren’t you coming?” Shhh, honey. Just do as mommy says and go home with daddy. The child did as she was told and before Bruce had a chance to see her wander away, she had already slipped around the corner feeling freer than she had in years.

My Review

Scribbler Tales (Volume 4) by Mary Ann Bernal is rich with stories of greed, deceit and murder. I was instantly heaved into the suspenseful worlds the author has created. Leaving me speechless at times and always wowed. The roller coaster ride is a rocky one which left me wanting more. I so enjoyed the smart twists and the unexpected turns.

This book opens up with Abducted, a brilliantly told tale of messed up priorities and corruption. Insightful and intoxicating. While Cunning kept me on the edge, my curiosity was sparked with the paranormal aspects that took me by surprise.

In Enamored, biological age was of little importance as long as the mind remained young. This intriguing escape captivated my senses and drew me in. I loved this tale with its romantic undertone and mystery.

Then there is Reckless that is totally rapturing. There is a killer on the loose and the police are preparing for a standoff. Only if they can find their suspect! There is more to this story than meets the eye.

Lastly, Safeguard is an unexpected story. Sarah was lucky to be alive, yet nothing is as it seems.

I devoured this book in no time. Quick enough to move onto another Mary Ann Bernal novel. Would highly recommend!

The first real punk band I had ever heard of was The Sex Pistols even though they were pretty much over by the time I discovered them. By the end of 1978, the Sex Pistols had broken up, and Sid Vicious was found dead from a heroin overdose in New York on February 1, 1979.

L.A. Punk Rocker is filled with raw stories about growing up on the streets of Los Angeles and the passion for music with an attitude. Revisit the eclectic style of the eighties!

Back when U2 were practically unknown, Bad Religion and the Go Go’s played small venues and Billy Idol was sporting his famous scowl. A time when Hollywood was abuzz with new music. Capital records swap-meat, Danny’s Dogs and Errol Flynn’s mansion were places we spent our nights when we weren’t listening to live bands at the Starwood or the Whiskey on Sunset.

We were rebels with a very good cause. We were creative outcasts who got tired of getting abused at school just for being different.

Even though being accepted was never easy and I always had to seek my parents approval for everything, these were the best times of my life. It was then when I had my first taste of freedom. During my punk rocker days I realized it was okay to be an individual.

Many thanks to the contributors of this book that have donated their stories just because their passion lives.

 

The brilliant author Mark Barry motivated me to visit this #LAPUNKQUEEN and it is because of him that L.A. Punk Rocker is a reality. I adore his enthusiasm and great love of music.

My Review

Her stories bring you to another place and are always a good escape into the unknown.

 

Broken Promises is a story about Madeline who has romantic feelings for her boss Nathan. This is a great story of deceit. The turns had me emotionally involved. I was swept away into the drama.

 

In Deception what happens when a movie star is murdered will surprise you. Waiting for this killer to make a mistake. It’s just a matter of time. This is a mystery that I was hoping would be solved.

Endgame is a wildly entertaining story where nothing is as it seems. Grabbed my attention and held on until the end. This is a pretty incredible story.

The last story, The Portrait is a powerful read. Evil lurks! What will a woman do to preserve her dynasty? Great fun.

Scribbler Tales: A Collection of Short Stories by Mary Ann Bernal, all dark, are written in such a way that you have to read more. The author crafts stories that pull her readers in. Wanting more but getting just enough. There is great skill that goes into her stories but she seems to write with ease. The words flow effortlessly. This is a smart collection that kept me guessing. Slices of life that no matter how far fetched feel authentic.

Desperate Measures is sharp. Hauntingly realistic. This is an interesting story about cloning. Quite chilling and entertainingly good.

Forbidden Lore is the story of Ethan and Arianna a married couple who met on 9 11. This is an intriguing story that kept me guessing and glued to the page. Nothing is as it seems and I was brought into the mystery that was Forbidden Lore.

Forever Lost is such a beautifully written, emotional tale that played out like scenes in a movie. There is love and there is deceit. This is a love story.

Sail with Me caught my attention. I love the conversational style of this story. Right in your face. A story of a military brat. This is Aaron’s story. A coming-of-age story of sorts. I was very touched.

In The Hourglass Flair knew her fate. She watched the hourglass knowing Death was at her feet. Flair held the secret from her husband Brice. This is a beautiful creative story that moved me.
