was the first sovereign of the Papal States, crowned Pepin as King of the
Franks, corresponded with the Emperor Constantine on the subject of the
restoration of the sacred images, restored many of the ancient churches of the
city, and built hospitals specifically for the poor near St. Peter's church
where he is buried.
