Knitters, Crocheters... we need you! heart emoticon Mainely Hugs, a chapter of the Knitted Knockers

Mainely Hugs is a new chapter of the Knitted Knockers organization that provides knitted and crocheted breast forms to women who have had a mastectomy. These knitted and crocheted breast forms are lightweight & soft. The materials are donated and there is no charge to the women who receive them. As we are only beginning to grow, we are seeking volunteer knitters and crocheters. Additionally we ask for donations of yarn, soft stuffing, double point knitting needles, straight knitting needles & crochet hooks. About 50 yards of yarn is needed to make one (50 gram ball or skein of yarn makes two). Crocheting takes a bit more yarn to keep stitches loose and soft. The breast forms come in all sizes and colors. We use no wool, only soft yarns such as sport or baby yarn. We are mindful of allergies and itching issues caused by some natural fibers. We provide patterns for both knitting and crocheting and have how to videos online to simplify. Crafters will master these patterns quickly. It takes only about 3-4 hours to make each one. If you or someone you know can help, please join us. Our goal is 150+ by end of October. Make just one or one hundred, we appreciate all efforts big and small. We are grateful for any materials or supplies that are donated. We strive to make sure nothing goes to waste. Help us make a difference in the lives of women recovering from breast cancer.
      Thank you, Kim Scott

          "My Lovely Blog" Blog Hop

          Author Kim Scott

I’ve been tagged by author Kim Scott (you can check out her blog at http://www.kimscottbooks.com/apps/blog) as a participant in the ‘My Lovely Blog’ blog hop.  Thanks, Kim.

And now for the answers you've all been waiting for.   DRUM ROLL PLEASE

          First Memory

At the young age of 4, I was playing in front of our house with the other children.  My mom was sitting on the front stairs, talking with the other moms when a dad walking a St. Bernard headed towards our little group.  We squealed with delight when told we could ride the dog, and one by one, each of my little friends was put on the back of the St. Bernard who then walked to the corner of the block and back again.  By the time it was my turn, the dog must have either been tired or resentful of being used as a horse, because he threw me to the ground and bit my neck.  And that is the reason why I am not an animal lover.

          Books

My love for books began with my first grade reader “Mac and Muff” - See Mac run.  See Muff run.  I don’t recall the titles of any other grade school readers, but I do remember quite a few required reading novels while in high school:  Ivanhoe, Silas Marner, To Have and to Hold, to name but a few.  Sir Walter Scott, George Eliot and Mary Johnston created a visual world for an impressionable young mind to explore.

Being fascinated with historical figures throughout the ages, my recreational reading might be considered required texts for history courses.  Favorites include Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Alfred the Great, Richard III, Elizabeth I, Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia, Henry VIII and so on - too many favorites to list.

An excellent find was discovering Frans G. Bengtsson’s The Long Ships and, more recently, Roma: A Novel of Ancient Rome by Steven Saylor.  Thank you, Amazon, for your category menus - such a wonderful selection of talented authors.

          Libraries or Bookshops

While growing up, most of my time was spent in the library, but with the advent of the mall, bookshops popped up and, suddenly, you could easily purchase a favorite book not readily available in the local library.

Yonkers, NY Public Library, Main Branch

Bookshops not only market best sellers and new releases, they offer bargain books on a variety of topics, which is how I built my medieval library.  Imagine me doing a happy dance when I came upon an illustrated copy of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles on one of the shelves.

It’s fun to browse a retail bookstore - you never know what gems you will find.

          Learning

I was an average student during my high school years and after graduation, I studied medical technology in a year-long program.  Working in the field for several years was rewarding, but I decided upon a different career path, studying business administration.  I was either a late bloomer or my interests had changed, because I graduated with honors with a B.S. degree.

Since writing-related courses was not part of the curriculum, I signed up for creative writing workshops and took non-credit writing courses throughout the years.  I continue to hone my craft and am currently enrolled in an on-line writing course at Future Learn.  And yes, I’m still having fun.

          What's Your Passion

First is my love for family - number one priority in my life.  You can find me in the stands at all sporting events and dance competitions, cheering on my grandchildren.  It doesn’t get any better than that.

Second is my passionate support of the United States Military.  Freedom is not free and we must never forget the sacrifices of the men and women who protect our country, and I have dedicated my novels to our fallen soldiers.

Next is my passion for history.  When I visited Rome a few years ago, I went to the Forum and stood where Julius Caesar stood and walked the coliseum where so many people died.  One could envision how it must have looked during the Empire’s glorious days.  Touching stones over two thousand years gives me Goosebumps.

Lastly, but not least, is my writing career.  There’s nothing better than having a reader enjoy a story you have written.  While mere man returns to dust, his words live forever.

And now it’s time for me to pass on the baton to author K. Meador (http://inthemidst-km.blogspot.com).

          Kim Scott
I sat with my feet up on the desk, gazing out the window. For weeks, I had been working seventy hours a week to complete my project. At last it was finished. The result far surpassed my expectations. The meeting with the client was minutes away, and I was fighting to contain my excitement.
They would be waiting in the conference room. My boss, Jay Simmons would be seated at the head of the massive table. The clients, dressed in black Armani, would be lined up along the wall. Mitch Kingsley preferred to stand, and his team stood with him. My co-workers sat along the far side of the table.
I wasn’t worried. While my co-workers were quaking in their seats, I would be cool and confident. It was time to enter the big room. I jumped up and grabbed the folder with the presentation. It was go time!

The Ruth Chernock Series by Kim Scott now in one edition on Kindle

This remarkable series begins in 18th century Maine with the hanging of sweet, young Ruth. She stood accused of heinous crimes but was she guilty? This is an incredible story you will never forget!
The four books in this series follow Ruth's family through decades and generations as they endure great tragedy, struggle to remain united. A strong tale of romance, heartbreak, tragedy and survival.

          Amazon Review

As life slips away and insanity continues, new life thrives on.

The Ruth Chernock Series starts out with Regarding Ruth and grabs your attention right away. Within the first paragraph I was drawn into the tale and curious about this girl named Ruth.
Regarding Ruth is intriguing while the dialog feels completely real and natural. The love story that flourishes grabbed hold and I read in fury wanting to know EVERYTHING! As the story continues this becomes an emotional journey that pulls on your heartstrings and then continues to tug.

It's a gut-wrenching tale that had me emotional and glued to the pages. The writing is so precise that the scenes before me felt real and it burned. It hurt deep down inside. I felt all of it. Such a heartfelt story that affected me greatly, leaving me glued to the pages.

This story weaves a rich tale that has it's readers wanting more. The mysteries throughout this chilling plot kept coming. Once when you think you know what's going to happen you are hit with another surprise. This is a great piece of work. One that I tried to devour every chance I got.

These books caught my attention from the start and I was absorbed all the way through. This emotional tale feels very true to life and pulls on your heartstrings.

"Gently she moved down to lay her head against his chest. She listened to the steady beat of his heart and felt the stirring of a distant memory. So many nights she had been comforted by her father in the great rocker in the sitting room. With her ear to his chest she heard the great thumping of his heartbeat. She smelled the strong scent of the whiskey on his breath as he spoke soothingly with his deep voice nearly a low growl. It was the place where she felt safe and secure. No one and nothing could harm her as she rested in his arms."

Kim Scott launch party for Book 2 in The Spirits of Maine Series is coming! This is the sequel to the Ghost Story 'Waiting for Harvey'.

This series of Ghost Stories is published under my pen name Lydia North. The 3rd book will be out in late December.

Lilies in the Clearing (The Spirits of Maine Book 2) by Lydia North is a fabulous follow up to Waiting For Harvey. This is a series that is spooky, clever and most of all difficult to put down. I couldn’t resist the mystery, intrigue and the evil that spread like wildfire. As in the first book, I was hooked right away and had a hard time stepping away from my iPad. This book is dark in a good way. Loved the suspense that kept me guessing throughout. So many unexpected turns. This author is truly gifted. She is skilled, making her characters not only believable but life-like and writing is super smooth. She just has a way of telling a story that makes you feel comfortable, like you are there on the scene. Her descriptions of the surroundings are mesmerizing, setting the scene perfectly. Being frightened was never so much fun. This is a great escape, a real adventure and an entertaining horror ride.

An excerpt from 'What Happened to Alex Manning' by Kim Scott

From the pen of Kim Scott

This is an excerpt from 'What Happened to Alex Manning', set in Maine in the early 1900s. This is book 1 of 2 that follows Alex Manning and his family through the Roaring 20s, into the Prohibition Era and the Great Depression.

If you like historical fiction seasoned with murder, treachery, love, loyalty, and shocking twists, then this is a must read at only .99, £0.77 or CDN$1.10 on Kindle & Noo...k.

Alex reached the balustrade and grasped Charlotte’s wrist. The full truth of it all struck him, forcefully. He needed to stop; to replay the events in his head and sort out the details. He desperately needed time. If only Charlotte would wait and allow him to think it through.

Charlotte’s shrill scream jumbled the thoughts whirling in his head. Urgently, he fought to put them in order again and make sense of everything. His anger dissipated as he struggled with the horrifying memories. With his heart thumping wildly, a sharp pain shot through his head.

If only Charlotte would stop. In her panicked state, she struggled with him certain that he meant to harm her. He stammered crazily as she flailed at him with tight fists. Terrified, he felt her pull away and she teetered backward at the edge of the top step.

Her arms pin wheeled twice, as her shoes slipped on the smooth marble. Alex grasped her arm and wrenched her back with all of his strength. She flew by him and slammed into the wall across the hall, coming to rest in a heap there. Off balance at the top of the stairs, Alex fell forward, reaching for the balustrade as he went. With nothing to stop him from falling, he tumbled, thumping and banging, all the way to the stone floor below.
