Book Spotlight: The Du Lac Curse: Book 5 of The Du Lac Chronicles by Mary Anne Yarde

God against Gods. King against King. Brother against Brother.

Mordred Pendragon had once said that the sons of Lancelot would eventually destroy each other, it seemed he was right all along.

Garren du Lac knew what the burning pyres meant in his brother's kingdom — invasion. But who would dare to challenge King Alden of Cerniw for his throne? Only one man was daring enough, arrogant enough, to attempt such a feat — Budic du Lac, their eldest half-brother.

While Merton du Lac struggles to come to terms with the magnitude of Budic's crime, there is another threat, one that is as ancient as it is powerful. But with the death toll rising and his men deserting who will take up the banner and fight in his name?

Excerpt

It had been a long time since Guinevere had last ridden a horse. She had loved galloping with the wind in her hair when she was a young girl, but youth was far behind her now. And yet, when she had first looked upon Alden du Lac, the years had rolled away and she was that shy young girl again, looking into the face of the man she had once loved. Alden looked so much like his father that it hurt her eyes and broke her heart to look upon him. Sister Agatha had once told her that time heals all wounds. But that was not true… A heart, once broken, can never be mended. You just learned to live with the pain.

Fate had been cruel, but Guinevere had tried her best not to become bitter. She had been made to marry a Pendragon, but her heart had always been faithful to the House of Du Lac. “Lancelot,” she whispered the name of the only man she had ever loved under her breath. Alden was what she had foolishly once imagined her own son would look like. Only there had been no son, just as there had been no future with the man she had loved. In the end, it was the Church that had saved, not only her life, but also her sanity. No one could stop her from loving God, and God would never stop loving her, no matter what.

And yet, here she was once again choosing Lancelot over God — choosing Lancelot over everything. The child whimpered, and she held onto him a little tighter.

“Shh, be brave,” she soothed.

“I want my Mother,” Jowan, Alden’s six-year-old son and heir, said as he sniffed back his tears.

“I know you do.” Guinevere wanted to reassure the child, tell him that he would see his mother soon. But she would not lie to him. She had been lied to as a child. She had been told that her mother had gone away for a few days, and then when her mother had not returned, she had been told that her mother had been delayed. Only she had not been delayed. She was dead. Guinevere may have been young, but she would have rather been told the truth from the start than to live a lie for two years before her father thought her old enough to understand.

Guinevere kicked the horse on again, and the child fell silent. Guinevere knew what she had to do, but that did not mean she did not have grave misgivings. Guinevere did not know how she would be received, but for the sake of Lancelot’s grandson, she would put aside their differences and ask… No, she would get down on her knees and beg this knight for help. It was the only thing she could do. It was that, or run away. Guinevere had been running for too long. She had been running from her past for years. It was about time she stopped.

Spotlight on novelist Drēma Drudge

Drēma Drudge

Fun facts

I am obsessed with true crime podcasts and TV shows. My show cues are probably frightening to those who don’t know that and happen to see mine! Nearly every morning I listen to Dateline’s podcast, and if they don’t upload one, I get disappointed.

I am terrified of roller coasters – except for Space Mountain in Disneyland, because you’re mostly in the dark on it and can’t see where you’re going. For some reason that makes it not as scary.

My favorite season is summer, to the point where I get irritated at winter as if it’s out to get me.

Virginia Woolf is the writer I love best – I have a bookcase full of her books and books about her. Actually, my second novel (in progress) features her work.

I only live a couple of hours from my dream retirement location, the Indiana Dunes, which is nice because I get to visit it several times a year. (Unless Paris would become a viable option. In that case, my husband and I might have to have two homes.)

Victorine

In 1863, Civil War is raging in the United States. Victorine Meurent is posing nude, in Paris, for paintings that will be heralded as the beginning of modern art:

Manet's Olympia and Picnic on the Grass

However, Victorine's persistent desire is not to be a model but to be a painter herself. In order to live authentically, she finds the strength to flout the expectations of her parents, bourgeois society, and the dominant male artists (whom she knows personally) while never losing her capacity for affection, kindness, and loyalty. Possessing both the incisive mind of a critic and the intuitive and unconventional impulses of an artist, Victorine and her survival instincts are tested in 1870, when the Prussian army lays siege to Paris and rat becomes a culinary delicacy.

Drema Drudge's powerful first novel Victorine not only gives this determined and gifted artist back to us but also recreates an era of important transition into the modern world.

About the Author

Drēma Drudge suffers from Stendhal’s Syndrome, the condition in which one becomes overwhelmed in the presence of great art. She attended Spalding University’s MFA in Creative Writing Program where she learned to transform that intensity into fiction.

Drēma has been writing in one capacity or another since she was nine, starting with terrible poems and graduating to melodramatic stories in junior high that her classmates passed around literature class.

She and her husband, musician and writer Barry Drudge, live in Indiana where they record their biweekly podcast, Writing All the Things, when not traveling. Her first novel, Victorine, was literally written in five countries while she and her husband wandered the globe. The pair has two grown children.

In addition to writing fiction, Drema has served as a writing coach, freelance writer, and educator. She’s represented by literary agent Lisa Gallagher of Defiore and Company.

Book Review - Planetary Wars: Rise of an Empire by Mary Ann Bernal

R.B.
5.0 out of 5 stars

Science fiction at it's finest!

February 15, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase

Planetary Wars Rise of an Empire by Mary Ann Bernal is a suspenseful ride into the unknown. A place none of us have ever been to or would be able to experience in our lifetime. That is what makes this fantasy so irresistible. The story reads true to life but is more exciting and powerfully exhilarating. It’s a dark tale of lies and destruction. The drama continues throughout and I got caught up in a web of deceit.

There is an old fashion quality to this tale. If you are a Star Trek fan I imagine you will appreciate the non-stop misadventures into unchartered territory.

The author writes a compelling story that pulled me in right away and made me feel as if the characters were real, though of course, from another planet. Such a nice escape!

“The whirlwind romance contributed to Anastasia’s inner turmoil. She usually had a good grip on her emotions, but with Jayden, she was no longer disciplined. Every rational thought was discarded while her heart ruled.”

The romantic exchange makes this more than just a fantasy. So much more. The heart wants what the heart wants. And at all costs, so it seems.

No period in the history of the United States of America forms a field so rich with chivalry, romance and drama as the years between 1865 and 1870, the so-called days of the reconstruction of the South, during which period the Nation was born again and started on its climb to the top rung of power among the nations of the world.

The Tyler family relocates from Mississippi to Texas for a new start after having to give up their plantation and over one hundred slaves as a result of the War Between the States.

Buck finds himself in love with two different women. Maggie, the dark skinned woman of his childhood and Kate, the delicate girl-child he found lost in the woods.

Would he stand firm through the scenes of bloodshed, disappointment, and sorrow? Would he stand the acid test and, in the end, find victory, peace, and happiness? Or would he weaken in the strenuous struggle ahead and fall ingloriously?

A harrowing adventure, based on true events, that is sure to leave you on the edge of your seat and thinking upon days past…

Journey to Freedom by K. Meador - an excerpt

"What would your wife say if she saw us eating together?"

"She won't dare come out in public the way she looks. If she has the faintest blemish she stays in. She won't walk with me by the rail because of the salty wind and ht hot glaring sun, as she puts it. I, on the other hand, see it in a totally different light."

"And what kind of light is that?"

He looked off in the distance. "I see the sun shimmering off the water like a diamond. I feel the wind as a sweet caress. I watch to see what creatures I can spot under the water. And I dream. I dream of what it must be like to live down there with no demands on you."

"Why did you marry her?"

Some things you didn't know, and didn't know you wanted to know, about author Morgan Songer

    Interesting stuff  about Morgan:

My favorite movie series is Aliens, Sigourney Weaver has been/ will always be my idol and role model.

My life goal is to free dive with great white sharks.

My guilty pleasure music is Nick Lachey, he just gets me!

Monster's Ink and Monster's University makes me cry like a baby, every time!

I live in Colorado but have never been skiing!

I am a bit of every character in my short stories/books.

Morgan has been an author all of her life. Even as a child, she was always happy living in a fantasy filled world, so much so that she found herself needing the rules of the real world to make sense. In doing so, Morgan found a way to connect the real with the unreal, the natural with the unnatural.

In Morgan's world of fiction, legends and myths are given reason, monsters given personalities, and symbols for hope are twisted for profit and selfish glory. All this is embedded in true emotions and uncomfortable situations, where her characters are forced to make drastic choices to survive.

Follow Morgan down the rabbit hole where the weird meet the unexpected in a world where wild things not only go bump in the night, but roam freely. This is a world that is carried through centuries, infusing Earth with an unending heritage of magic and science.
