Blog Hop: Learn about authors Brenda Perlin, Ngaire Elder, Bill Jones, Jr., Elise VanCise

Many thanks to Brenda Perlin who invited me to participate in this blog hop.

First - the questions

What am I working on?

I have just launched The Briton and the Dane: Timeline

My current project is seeking producers / investors for The Briton and the Dane screenplay written by award winning producer, director and screenwriter, Colin Stewart.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I delve into the mindset of the characters, presenting two sides of the coin, creating a gray area, which might have the reader becoming sympathetic to the villain's plight.  There are many conflicting emotions throughout my novels pertaining to religion, paternal approval and the effect deployment has on military families.

Why do I write what I do?

After reading Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe", I became enthralled with early British history and admit to being an incurable romantic Anglophile.

How does my writing process work?

Once I've completed the story, I set it aside for a week before reading it again, but wearing my editor's cap.  I then submit the manuscript to my editor for a final review.  Next step is Whispering Legends Press publishing the work.

About Brenda Perlin:

Brenda Perlin is an independent adult contemporary fiction author.   Brenda evokes emotional responses in her readers by using a provocatively unique writing style.   Her latest book in the Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles, captures the soul-wrenching conflicts of a personal struggle for emotional fulfillment.

Ever since Brenda was a child, she has been fascinated with writing.  She draws her biggest inspiration from Judy Blume.  This sparked a passion in Brenda to pursue personal expression through writing.  Once she was old enough to go to coffee shops alone, Brenda recalls losing herself in the world of writing, all while documenting her ideas on paper napkins.

There is really no creative process, I just write,” – Brenda Perlin

Shattered Reality (Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles: Book One) was published with Master Koda Select Publishing.   Within a short time, the book developed a strong fan base and is continuing to grow as it both entertains its readers and leaves them in a state of profound reflection.  In the near future, Brenda would like to have Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles expanded into a trilogy in order to tell the untold stories of her characters.
Burnt Promises Synopsis
The main character, Brooklyn must learn many valuable lessons about herself, not without making many costly mistakes along the way. Now that she has found what she considered, her “soul-mate” in Bo, she would have to continue to defend herself against even her closest of friends, family members, and Bo’s soon-to-be ex-wife, Ruth.

This first person account chronicles the inexhaustible struggles she faces with the man that she loves. Brooklyn must learn a thing or two about patience as Bo’s divorce settlement seems to be never ending. Throughout her journey, Brooklyn shares some of Ruth’s intimate emails to Bo and gives you a good look into the mind of a woman scorned.

After college and university, Ngaire embarked on a career in the health and safety sector.  As a Health and Safety Advisor, she was instrumental in implementing health and safety laws in the workplace.  After meeting her husband, she chose a new occupation, and became a full-time wife and mother.
In the past decade, Ngaire has managed to balance a writing career and family commitments.  She has participated in reading events at primary schools in County Derry, Northern Ireland, Seeley Primary School, Sherwood, and has taught English to young children participating in the Spanish school system’s extracurricular activity programme.  She has been interviewed extensively by European and American bloggers, and her work has been featured in Indie Author News, British Indie Fiction, the Coleraine Times, and The Nottingham Post.
Ngaire is a passionate supporter of horse rescue, having volunteered in a rescue center in southern Spain.  She is actively involved in fund raisers supporting not only local rescue centers, but also for international programs, such as saving the wild mustangs in the Pryor Mountain range in Montana.
Ngaire resides in Spain with her husband and four children.

 About Bill Jones, Jr.

Bill Jones, Jr. was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up as a painfully shy kid in southern Virginia, listening to his mother’s war stories and wondering why he didn’t inherit her gift for storytelling. Some years later, after discovering he had a talent for writing poetry, Bill decided that perhaps not all of Mom’s genetics went to waste. In 2008, a writer friend encouraged him to pen a short story. He loved it. Shortly thereafter, he decided to see if he could turn the story into a book. It became two: Discovery and Awakening, the first two books of his fantasy fiction series The Stream.
Since then, he’s been writing almost constantly. He finished The Stream trilogy with Emprise, and then went on to write a short story anthology, The Juice and Other Stories, as well as his first Sci-Fi novel, Hard as Roxx. Currently, he’s editing a detective novel, and has begun a second short story collection.
On those rare days he’s not working at his Lockheed Martin day job, or his writing night job, Bill is a photographer, father, and life coach, along with other things he does for love rather than money. Usually, however, Bill can be found somewhere under a camera, shooting whatever there is. On the very best days, his photos end up as a scene in a book. On his bad days, they still end up as an scene in a book – just an angry one.
Bill likes cheese.

In 2137, the universal One Child Law says Roxanne Grail must surrender her daughter Jessi for extermination or die with her. The Law picked the wrong girl.

In a world that is a distorted hybrid of rigid control and absolute lawlessness, Roxanne Grail broke The Law: she got pregnant for the second time, and the penalty is death. Now, she and her two girls need to make it across the Sahara to the frozen European north and freedom.

Follow Roxx and her two daughters, along with Roxx's partner, Trint, as they attempt to flee her youngest daughter's father, who just happens to lead one of the most powerful armies in the world. It is an exciting battle for survival, which features robot armies, a believable dystopian society, advanced technology, a rebel insurgency, as well as Roxx, who is determined to kill anyone who threatens her daughters.

So, it is Roxx, her two daughters, and Trint, against the world. Those odds suit Roxx just fine.

DID YOU KNOW: The armor used in Gladiator was made of rubber covered with leather to make it malleable while shooting fight scenes.

Many thanks to author and fellow history buff, Elise VanCise, for stopping by.  I just love this stuff - thanks, Elise.

Gladiator trivia: film vs. history
By Elise VanCise

Often filmmakers and even authors blur the lines of history to make a story work. Nothing wrong with that; fiction is supposed to be made up, filled with adventures that perhaps historic figures might cringe at in real life. It’s fun to go back and compare some of these retellings with actual facts.  Here are some fun trivia facts to go with the fiction of one of my favorite films Gladiator.

Modern day athletes often do product endorsements. Ancient Roman gladiators actually did this also. The producers of the film considered including this in the script but discarded the idea as unbelievable.

During the opening battle we see roman soldiers marching to meet the barbarians in open combat with their pilas, today we call them javelins, in hand as if they were spears. In actual Roman battle, they were thrown at the enemy before the two sides would meet. A pilum was too fragile to be used as a spear because the tip was designed to break off and bend after contact to disallow the enemy to throw them back at the legionaries.

Before the opening battle in the film we see Maximus with a ‘pet’ wolf who accompanies him in battle. The fierce Roman army was known for intimidation tactics. At the forefront of the ranks an individual known as a Signifier was placed. It was a position of honor, and he carried the standard that displayed the legion’s honors. Over the Signifier’s helmet and armor, he would wear an animal skin, often a wolf, in order to make a fierce impression on the enemy.

When Commodus goes with Lucius to meet Maximus at the Colosseum, he tells Maximus that Lucius insists Maximus is Hector reborn. Then Commodus asks Lucius, "Or was it Hercules?" The real emperor Commodus believed he was Hercules reborn.

The short sword used by the Roman army, the Gladius Hispaniensis, is seen being used by many gladiators in the film. The version used in the arena in the film is accurate as it was often shorter than the military version. The use of the common use of the gladius in arena battles is actually the source of the word "gladiator".

The real Commodus actually fought several times in the arena as a gladiator.

Unknown to the Gladiator Emperor Commodus, the soldiers would weaken his opponent by stabbing the gladiator in the back to prevent harm to their liege but also to ensure their emperor won.

In the film, Maximus kills Commodus in the arena. In life, the emperor was strangled in his dressing room by a man named Narcissus. Narcissus was a Roman wrestler employed as Commodus’ sparring partner at the time.

I hope you enjoyed this little bit of Roman trivia. I’ve always had a fascination with this period of history and its people. Could be why I named my blog Gladiator’s Pen.  Stop by anytime  for stories, guest authors, tips posts, and of course a little history now and then.

Gladiator's Pen: Coming Soon The Briton and the Dane: Timeline by Mary Ann Bernal

Gladiator's Pen: Coming Soon The Briton and the Dane: Timeline by M...:

Coming Soon The Briton and the Dane: Timeline by Mary Ann Bernal
Today Mary Ann Bernal joins us in the ludis to talk about her upcoming release The Briton and The Dane: Timeline. So pour a cuppa and get comfortable as we explore the latest addition to this fantastic novel series.

GP: What Inspired You to write this novel in The Briton and the Dane franchise?
Mary Ann: When I first set pen to paper when writing The Briton and the Dane, the storyline was about Gwyneth and Erik’s relationship, and the problems they faced in a land ravaged by war and conquest. Gwyneth was a Christian Saxon and Erik was a pagan Danish Viking. Would their love survive the obstacles they had to face?

However, as the story evolved, the ancillary characters started demanding more representation, wishing to have to have additional “screen time.” Suddenly, there wasn’t enough room to satisfy everyone in one novel, which gave birth to the trilogy.

To me, Gwyneth and Erik shared the stage with too many players, and I do believe they felt cheated. I was toying with the idea of a standalone novel dedicated to Gwyneth and Erik, but what if fate had kept them apart, centuries apart? How would a 21st century Gwyneth fare in 11th century England?

Science Fiction and Anglo-Saxon England, two of my favorite topics in one novel. It cannot get any better than this.

Blurb:
Dr. Gwyneth Franger is a renowned expert in early medieval England who is set upon learning the truth about the death of Lord Erik, the last descendant of the powerful House of Wareham. Her quest becomes an obsession, a condition that began with the discovery of a portrait of the tall and valiant warrior with which she forms an extraordinary and inexplicable bond.

Digesting troves of mildewed scrolls and source documentation only enhances her belief that Lord Erik was brutally assassinated by a cabal of traitors in the pay of William the Bastard, shortly before the onslaught of the Norman Invasion.

On an archeological dig in Southern England, her team unearths an Anglo-Saxon fortress, a vast citadel built during the reign of Alfred the Great, which she believes was Lord Erik’s stronghold. In the midst of her excitement, she is awakened one night from her slumbers by a disconcerting anomaly emerging from the site.

Dr. Franger finds herself transported back to the Dark Ages and at the side of the noble Lord Erik who commands an army of elite Saxon warriors, a swift and mobile force able to deploy quickly throughout the kingdom to ward off invaders.

Witnessing the unrest firsthand, Gwyneth senses that her instincts had been right all along, and she is determined to learn the identities of the treacherous blackguards hiding in the shadows, villains who may well be posing as Lord Erik’s friends and counselors.

Will Gwyneth stop the assassins? Is she strong enough to walk away and watch her beloved Erik die? Or will she intervene, change the course of history and wipe out an entire timeline to save the man she loves with all her heart?

Excerpt
Once the passengers had disembarked, and the ship was moored, the Captain went home. The dwelling was small, with two rooms, which was ample for a man living alone. He opened the chest that had been delivered earlier, retrieving the ledger and tossed it on the table. He filled a cup with his favorite wine and sat before the fire. For some reason, his curiosity had been aroused, and he wanted to know more of Hugh and of the privileged people he was following. He had not expected his passengers to list their true names and had been quite surprised when he read the entry. Bryson, Erik and Gwyneth of Wareham. He would make discreet inquiries once he returned to Britannia, hoping to find answers to his questions. Information about Hugh, on the other hand, would not be easily obtained. The man had a malevolent demeanor, which he had found unsettling. He would have to tread carefully, lest he put his life at risk.

The Captain finished a flask of wine, drinking the intoxicating brew over the course of the evening. He was falling asleep before the fire as he did most nights, preferring the solitude. He did not hear the door open in his inebriated state, nor did his drooping eyes notice the wind-whipped flames dancing in the hearth. His assailant crept towards him, dagger in hand, and swiftly slit the Captain’s throat. The dead man slumped over, his bloodied body falling upon the floor. Hugh sheathed his wet blade as he glanced about the room searching for the ledger, which was still upon the table. He looked at the open page, which is where he had signed his name. He tossed the damning evidence into the fire and waited until the book was devoured by the raging inferno before disappearing into the night.

Mr. Chuckles Braves the Glades

Everglades, Exposures and Elise Van Cise...around the Cauldron

Elise VanCise.

Floridean, mother, freelance photojournalist, award winning author, published in print and digital media. Serious blogger. And all this too...

Elise is a Florida Cracker, with a love for adventure and historic places. NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison for Lake County, Florida, Founder of Lake Writers of Lake County, Florida. Just reading what she does on a daily basis is enough to send a lazy man reaching for his sleeping cap. Knowing that, with this kind of action in her life, any window we had to connect was a tiny one in the bathroom rather than one of those giant French ones in the lounge, I picked up the Wizphone post haste and contacted Elise, who was aquaplaning about a swampy delta on one of those cool hovercraft thingies while we nattered.
